WHERE TO?
“South”
“To the coast”
“To open water”
Until recently, this was the limit of our knowledge
about the migration and wintering locations of loons that summer in the
Adirondacks and throughout the Northeast. There are many unanswered
questions…
·Do loons use specific areas to gather together for
migration (“staging up”)?
·Are loons affected by weather patterns before and
during migration?
·How do they adapt to diet changes as they transition
to and from freshwater and saltwater habitats?
·Are loons at increased risk of exposure to
contaminants, fishing line entanglement, lead sinker toxicity, disease,
or other problems while migrating or on their wintering areas?
·Where and how should wildlife managers focus their
conservation efforts for this species based on the human-related and
natural risks these birds are exposed to throughout their range?
These are but a few of the questions the Adirondack
Cooperative Loon Program hopes to answer by using satellite telemetry
techniques to identify Adirondack loon migration patterns and wintering
areas.
